Insights To Career Development
Insights To Career Development Career- A word that appears to be known to many people; its usage in practical everyday life portrays otherwise. The term, to some means a job or related jobs within a particular industry or sector that someone is doing to get paid. Well, that may be true; however, an objective study conducted by organizational behaviourist researchers shows that career does not merely focus on the job but encompasses individual work-related and other life experiences within and outside the confines of an organization which forms the life pattern of individuals. The subject takes into cognisance the work and life experiences of an individual. To this end, to talk about job or work still falls within the purview of career life. However, to succeed in ones chosen field of endeavour can be a difficult task but not unachievable. People choose professions based on different factors. Personal sentiments such as reward, professional prestige or own satisfaction may be the reason for some, developing relevant skills within an organization may be the motivation for others. Whatever factor that may predispose someone towards venturing into a profession, having the right attitude and information is key to recording success. It is undoubtedly true that making headway in a chosen vocation is not merely a function of a single activity at a particular time or a spontaneous response to job demand. Instead, it is a well and coordinated activity requiring a lot of plannings. Hence, the need for a wide range of educational, counselling and management interventions aimed at supporting individuals to develop and adequately manage their career. Career support is professional bodies who provide management and development roles either for a job seeker or an employee in an organization. The relevance of their functions is reflected in these job situations: Job Internship Employers offer potential employees employment in their organization at a fixed time. This period could be part of college time or when an individual is introduced into the labour market as a job seeker. As a way of preparing for future challenges in ones chosen field, the period of internship presents an excellent platform that supports young people to learn relevant skills and gather start-up experience to acquire job status. For instance, some international companies such as Chevron and Total in the petroleum sector, do provide this support service in different areas such as business development, corporate affairs, information, finance, engineering and so much more. This is to allow students in colleges, universities and; young graduates get acquainted with skills necessary to build a line of work in the relevant sectors later in life. Career Change People do jobs for different reasons, and they change jobs for various reasons. Fear of losing ones position through downsizing to lack of satisfaction may be the cause. Irrespective of the motivating factor for taking up employment, the frustration that comes with job roles that can no longer bring pleasure has a strong bearing on the emotional and professional ability of a worker. However, the confusion could be more as an individual seeks to change, and get adjusted into a new profession or role. Hence the need to embrace a line of work counselling to get a job that is consistent with their unique experience or expectations. Interested in a vocation change?. One of the leading companies that engage in mentoring and tutoring people who desire discipline change is career foundry. Check it out. Job Placement Finding a job at an individual level may not be secure. There are agencies or organizations which serve as go between-serving the interest of both employers and those seeking to be employed. They conduct essential job interviews with job seekers to determine their level of skills, experience, education and the suitability to their career choices. This system though, is rewarding to a business organization in that the cost of conducting interviews and advert placement is taken care of. To a job applicant, his information is kept on file with job placement agencies until there is a job vacancy. He can easily be connected with a job requiring his skills and experience. On the job training and mentorship The operational mechanism put in place by a company or a business organization for updating, upgrading, and preparation of staffs as they move up the occupational ladder or change roles within the establishment provides support for them. Depending on the organizational policy to either provide mentorship through experienced officers or line managers or resorting to the services of professional consultants, job counsellors or specialists is a boost for developing a profession. Career Progression Everyone desires to advance in their line of work. Some job-advancement skills or mentoring may not be available within reach of an organization. In such situations, it becomes necessary to learn those new roles or skills from external sources. An employee must discover those skills and job experiences that are consistent with the demand for their profession. It is important to note that, on the job training or activities is not enough to move one up the chain of command and an employer is not solely responsible for all that will make an employee to learn the necessary skills to advance his vocation forward. Building a network of relationship with mentors outside the organization, connecting with those in the same job situation is a service towards sustaining and developing a profession. To conclude, part of what translates a vision into reality is to be associated with people who believe and, are ready to support your goals. Getting helping hands relevant to aid you through your career path is undoubtedly the best way to record success in life.

Google Hangout Recap How to Find a Career You Love, Get a Raise, and More!
Google Hangout Recap How to Find a Career You Love, Get a Raise, and More! Last week I participated in a Google hangout with some fabulous ladies. We discussed tons of career topics, including how to get a raise, how to gain more responsibilities, and tips for interviewing. Heres a short recap of the interview! Thanks, Anna Taylor for coordinating. Whoâs hanging out? Anna Runyan â" Classy Career Girl Anna Taylor â" Pink Black Special Guest: Katie Robinson â" Ask the Young Professional 1. If youâre unsure about your career path, take a personality assessment. Time is definitely ticking for you to figure out what you want to pursue as a career when you begin college. Anna advised that if youâre not completely sure about what you want to do yet to see what your personality assessment tells you. I remember taking these little assessments in high school before starting college. They definitely help put things into perspective about yourself and your personality. 2. Use the skills you enjoy in your career. There are a lot of components to journalism today that I love and Iâm hoping that I get to use those components and skills when I start my career. Iâve learned over the past year that I enjoy working with online media more so than traditional print media and so thatâs the direction I want my career to take. Take a moment to think about the skills that you really enjoy and see how that could play into your career. 3. Donât be afraid to reach out to people. Networking can play a big role in your job search and could possibly land you a job. Talk to people you know, knew years ago and people you donât know and maintain those relationships. Anna shared with us Classy Career Girlâs 4Ã4 Networking Challenge and advised we use this as a way to kick-off some relationships. She also suggested making a list of people you would like to meet and to reach out to them. LinkedIn is a great tool for this. Preparing for a Job Interview Write down the answers to the 10 â" 15 most common interview questions. Talk about your results and accomplishments, not just what you have done. Know that you may not be hired not because of how you may or may not fit into the work environment. Best Advice for Frustrated Young Professionals Frustrated due to low pay rate â" Ask for a raise by making a presentation of your achievements to show why you deserve a raise. Frustrated with the lack of responsibilities â" Seek more opportunities by talking with your boss and volunteering more often. Career Development Opportunities at Work Take advantage of what your company offers: training, classes, conferences, etc. Donât be discouraged if not a lot of people go. Do what will help you improve. Self-Promoting Learn to say thank you for compliments instead of brushing off accomplishments. Complement others and recognize their accomplishments, you will be complimented in return. Had a ton of fun answering your questions! Thanks, ladies!

Three years of Debut... - Debut three years birthday
Three years of Debut... - Debut three years birthday Three whole years ago, Debut was born into this world (Mind. Blown.) Three whole years of helping students get started on their career journey, three whole years of articles from our various student and grad experts across the country (and even the globe), and three whole years of hard work from the ever-growing Debut family. From what started as just a couple of guys in a small (windowless) room is now a 30 plus stronghold of career experts that work tirelessly everyday to make Debut the best it can be. Now, you dear readers have probably heard a lot from me and from our founders. So as a change for our birthday, Iâve decided to shine a spotlight on the rest of the company, to get their insights into what really makes Debut unique. Believing in our concept Debut was built on the idea that users could search for careers all on their phones, making the process simpler, quicker and more mobile. It also brought careers straight to users through Talent Spots, providing them with opportunities that they may have never considered before. Everyone who works here has a genuine interest in not just the sector that we work in, but all of these unique aspects that set us apart from other companies in this space. Derhen, Partnerships Executive, explains why he personally chose to work here: âThere is a real space to grow into, and I wanted to be part of that adventure.â And an adventure it has been! This year alone weâve celebrated hitting the 100,000 registered user mark in our database, published over 200 Insight articles, closed our Series A round of funding and been featured over 200 times in the press. Our Director of Marketing, Dave, claims âWeâre learning everyday, and working towards delivering our vision!â But why do these milestones matter so much to us? Well, itâs because of our users of course! We know that weâve done our job right when we help students graduates and make a difference in their lives. We do this by opening new doors for opportunities when it comes to careers, and giving them the advice and guidance that they need. Or, as Holly, Strategic Partnership Manager better puts it: âWe put students first by educating and supporting them, as no one really knows what they want to do. But at least we can advise them about a role that we think would match their competencies, something I never had.â At the end of the day, everything we work towards is to help students find their true career path, and itâs a force that drives everyone in the company. As Sebas, Backend and Infrastructure Lead, says: âThere are no teams when we try to achieve our goals. Everybody gives their best and pushes to make things come true, regardless of job title or where we sit.â Hear, hear. Dishing out the content you want We want to do more than offer up just boat-loads of opportunities. We want to advise, entertain and inform every user that engages with Debut. As Community and Content Manager Grace says: âWeâre passionate (horribly overused word, but so true!) about making a real difference not only in the student and graduate recruitment space, but to the lives of students and graduates individually, too.â We want to support every student and graduate at whatever point they are in their career journey. From the first day of university, to the moment theyâre handed their degree, and we do this with our guides, blogs (thanks for sticking around), campaigns and events. Only last week we hosted a back-to-back career extravaganza, designed to encourage people to enhance their employability, even if they had no idea what they originally wanted to do. We ALSO launched our brand new social mobility initiative, Dress to Impress. And after each thing we do, we wait for the feedback. Because we want to continuously improve, and help you guys be the best you can be. Software Developer Maxi claims that all the above is what makes Debut unique: âWe really focus on our users, we care about what they need and we do everything possible to help them launch their careers.â And we aim to find out what users want to know, and continue to create content that will aid you, job secured or not. Having the âfamilyâ atmosphere When I first came to work at Debut, the first thing that struck out to me was how approachable and friendly everyone was. The team have created an environment that makes us all want to come to work everyday. From organising a company 5k Tough Mudder (where I nearly suffered a heart attack, despite being practically dragged around the course), to having many canine friends stopping by the office. the latter are one of Senior Marketing Manager Mattâs favourite things about working here (and probably many others!) Partnerships Executive Kony actually mentioned some of the time she spent with her colleagues as being some of the fondest memories of the company: âI used to love the quizzes weâd do at WeWork, and of course the endless birthday celebrations with cake!â. If youâve spent anytime on our Instagram, then youâll know that we love dogs and cake a LOT. Speaking of birthdays, Partnerships Success Lead Sonal has a particular one that she remembers: âFor our COO Micheles birthday we plastered his desk and the entire office in a ridiculous amount of decorations these were things we had lying around such as straws, balloons, post its, you name it! We all had a laugh and it was hilarious to see his reaction.â We also moved office this year, and every day our Office Manager Jen is adding new touches to our Debut home that make it just that extra bit more special. Our B2B Marketing Manager, Rikke, is particularly fond of our new digs: âI love the homely environment and the fact that I can sit cuddled up in a sofa all day, not wearing shoes!â Us too Rikke. Looking forward to the future With three years down, we started thinking about where the next three will take us. After all, when we see how much weâve grown in this space of time, then the opportunities are endless! Tomas, our Head of Tech, mentioned an ambition that is echoed by pretty much everyone in the company: âI want to see us taking our first steps internationally.â Thereâs a real need for guidance across the world when it comes to job choices post-education, and it would be amazing to share Debutâs expertise with other countries and help more international students. Many people in the company mentioned Europe as being the first ideal port of call for expansion, but of course only time will tell to where we go! Meanwhile Partnerships Success Lead Olga is thinking about Debut from the studentsâ perspectives: âI want Debut to be the word on everyones lips at universityâ. Again, another sentiment shared by everyone at Debut. Weâre the student careers app-only company with highest volume of users, and weâre constantly growing. Michele, Co-founder COO, shares his personal ambition: âI want Debut to become the platform of choice of every student and graduate in the UK!â By constantly taking on-board feedback from our users and creating brand new content and events to engage our audiences, we really hope that we can continue to help you guys along your career journey, no matter where you are. You guys are our priority, and we wonât forget that. So whatever feedback you have, whatever you want to see from us, let us know on our social channels, @DebutCareers. And of course, please join us in celebrating three years of Debut, and looking forward to the years to come! Connect with Debut on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn for more careers insights.

Top Ten Tips fo Authentic Communication at Work - Jane Jackson Career
Top Ten Tips fo Authentic Communication at Work - Jane Jackson Career Top Ten Tips for Authentic Communication at WorkEffective communication in the workplace is something we canât take for granted. How many times have you said to yourself, âBut I thought he/she meant â¦â¦â Did you simply assume you knew what was meant or did you ask for clarification at the right time? Did you take some things for granted and then realize that something had been lost in translation? These guidelines will promote greater awareness and improved communication.1. Be responsible for what you are saying, take ownership to ensure authentic communications.2. To communicate effectively, speak specifically rather than generally. Avoid statements such as, âEVERYONE thinks that wayâ or âThis ALWAYS happensâ Do you really mean everyone and always?3. No mind reading. Second-guessing by assuming you understand is the easiest way down the road to miscommunication and creation of defensiveness on the part of the listener. Allow others to take responsibility for what they are saying and ask for clarification, âWhat specifically do you mean/expect by that?â4. Listen to your inner voice. Become aware of when you need to speak and when you donât. Itâs not always necessary speak, or respond just for the sake of having something to say.5. Listen carefully and with respect to what another person is telling you. Always remember we have 2 ears and 1 mouth and they are to be used in that ratio. Do not formulate your response whilst someone is speaking. Wait until the speaker has finished so you have the chance to digest fully what has been communicated before you speak.6. Be comfortable with silence in communication. Reflect on what was just said and check your motivations for what you are about to say. This may take a few moments. You are honoring the speaker and yourself.7. Respect differences. People have differing ideas, thoughts and feelings from you. Dont try to convert them to your way. Celebrate the diversity and w hat you can learn from it. Understand that we all filter information according to the experiences we have had in our lives and no two people see the same situation in the same light.8. Be aware of your own barriers. Our prejudices, expectations, judgments and a need to control or always be right are obstacles to authentic communications.9. Look and listen for the essence of a person within his or her words. Concentrate on finding their motivations and accept them for who they are.10. Be able to laugh at yourself and with others, never laugh at them. Humour is a great diffuser of tension and misunderstanding. Humility is a strength that will ensure you see and experience the world as it truly is.Learn the 3 Secrets to Personal Branding for Career Success in this FREE MASTERCLASS today!Want to know how you can improve your communication style?
